NOW SOLD OUT Hilarity Bites Comedy Club featuring Noel James, Bethany Black, Sam Gore, and host Tom Houghton Tickets available here or from the Centre Noel James Britain's Got Talent 2018 semi-finalistNoel James has been making people laugh for over 25 years and much of stand-up's royalty has cited him as being a big influence: from Tim Vine and Milton Jones, to Frank Skinner and Dylan Moran. Noel is surreal, bizarre, absurd, intelligent, and yet, somehow strangely attractive. He's an accessible act who generally goes down well anywhere; his best lines would grace any comedian's repertoire, whilst the worst would shame a cracker factory. Highly original and just plain ridiculous. “Liberates the lunatic side to our personalities - brilliantly!” - Time Out “Stands out like a droll giant in a comedy land of trite dwarfs” - The Independent Bethany Black Bethany Black has been a professional stand-up comedian since 2004. Her debut show 'Beth Becomes Her' detailed the story of her being transgender, chronicling everything from her coming out through her transition and eventually falling in love. It was nominated for Best Debut at the Leicester Comedy Festival in 2008, eventually losing out to Sarah Millican. Over the course of her career Beth has performed alongside some of the biggest names in comedy, including Alan Carr, Sarah Millican, Tim Minchin and Rhys Darby. In late 2017 / early 2018 Beth filmed the role of Pocahantas for No Offence. Prior to which, in 2015 she was cast as Helen in Russell T. Davies multi channel shows Cucumber, Banana, and Tofu, where she was the first trans actress to play a leading role. In late 2015, Beth played 474 in Doctor Who. “Her journey to Channel Four, ‘Doctor Who’ and steadily rising star status makes for hilarious if sometimes incredulous listening” - ✭✭✭✭✭ - Three Weeks “Honest, to the point, and very, very funny” - ✭✭✭✭ - Arts Award Voice “The anecdotes are pitched perfectly... very funny” - Chortle Sam Gore A confident and original young act with a brilliant command of language, Sam’s been wowing crowds and rapidly climbing the comedy ladder. Having cemented his position as one of the best new performers on the circuit with no less than five New Act of the Year titles (including the Hilarity Bites title in 2008), he’s gone on to impress everywhere from weekend clubs to music festivals, biker rallies and theatres. Sam made his solo debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015, winning plaudits from audiences for his show "The Cryptid Crossword", whilst also appearing in the highly regarded AAA Comedy showcase at The Pleasance. In 2010 Sam appeared in the double-header show A Calculated Risk as part of the Free Festival. In 2011 he returned to the Fringe as part of the Amused Moose Laugh-Off showcase, having won his way through to the final of that competition as well. Sam is also a hugely accomplished writer, plying his trade on shows such as Russell Howard's Good News and Chris Addison's Show & Tell. “The jokes are as cruel as they are funny, i.e. very... a class act indeed” - Chortle “Superbly crafted gags that showcase a vivid use of imagery and language... great wordplay, refreshing honesty and a wonderfully dark view of life” - Giggle Beats Tom Houghton Tom Houghton was previously 1/5th of comedy troupe "The Noise Next Door" and is now taking the comedy circuit by storm with his quick wit, charming persona and ludicrous comedy songs. Regularly performing up and down the country and abroad, you may even have caught him on Channel Fours "First Dates Hotel", or at his sell-out debut Edinburgh Fringe show, which went on tour in early 2018. Strap in and be prepared to have your funny bones tickled and your levels of decency questioned by one of the hottest new acts around. “this unexpected tour de force warrants a 21-gun salute” - ★★★★ – The Daily Telegraph “Please take my advice. Along with being one of the most in-demand headliners on the UK circuit, he’s toured nationally and performed solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe many times since starting out in comedy in the year 2000. Rob has performed throughout the world, in shows from the Middle East to Melbourne, Shanghai to the South of France, and he has appeared on any number of Radio and TV shows since starting out on 99 Things To Do Before You Die, most recently winning Celebrity Mastermind on BBC One. “An evening in his company is nothing less than a joy” - The Independent on Sunday “A highly impressive one-man soundscape powered mainly by energy and excellent guitar skills” - The Scotsman “Ingenious and hilarious” - The Guardian Steve Bugeja is one of comedy’s most exciting rising stars. Steve wrote and performed his own sketch 10 Things You Should Know as an Adult for BBC3, acted in 4Music’s sketch show Pop Sludge and starred in a viral comedy video for Lucozade alongside England footballer Harry Kane. In 2018, Steve embarked on his fourth and largest national tour with Almost, following the success of a critically-acclaimed, sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. The tour included a 6-night run at London’s Soho Theatre and was extended into 2019 due to demand. This tour follows his previous critically-acclaimed shows Summer Camp (2017), Unpronounceable (2016) and Day Release (2015). Unpronounceable and Summer Camp went on to tour nationwide, selling out increasingly large venues year on year. “Truly hilarious” - Fest “A work of substance, which puts gags front and centre of a compelling narrative” - Chortle “Bugeja has an eye for original comic detail that's all his own, he not only mines big laughs from this, but also an unexpected amount of gentle pathos” - The Guardian Howard Walker Hirsute, hospitable, and h-engaging, Howard hails from Yorkshire and proffers oodles of warmth with observations on everyday life. Comedy Cellar New Act Award winner and Hilarity Bites New Act of the Year finalist, with captivating stories he travels the UK to charm and entertain, and find the answer to the age old question; where can you find free parking after 6? It’s kinda her thing. She gigs all over the country in comedy clubs doing just that, to mostly success. She also makes her Mum laugh loads. She’s done lots of lovely things whilst being a comedian like being tour support for The Boy With Tape On His Face and Vikki Stone. She has written for The News Quiz and you can hear her dulcet Northern tones featured on the BBC Radio 2 documentary series, The History of British Comedy. She got to be very silly indeed on a couple of episodes of the CBBC show, The Dog Ate My Homework. She recently co-hosted a Tv pilot on ITV2 called Lovefix. Katie has performed three solo stand up shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is currently working on her fourth show when she’s not consumed with trying to keep the human she has made alive. “Mulgrew is an engaging, likeable presence who doesn’t struggle to hold the audience’s attention. This is a well-structured thoughtful show.. radiating warmth” - Chortle “charmingly honest... delightfully tender and thoroughly entertaining” - The Skinny “...honest, un-cynical comedy that’s rough around the edges but tremendously warm” - Three Weeks Shooting Truth by Molly Davies Saturday August 24th 7pm YTYT perform this intriguing and thought provoking play
Deep in the woods near an abandoned village, a group of students is about to shoot the story of the youngest-ever witch – and Alice feels she’s finally found a role. In the same woods, four centuries earlier, a gang of teenagers gather, fearful and intrigued to have found a witch in their midst – and Freya thinks at last she has some power. Past and present collide in an unsettling tale of witchcraft, film-making and practical jokes gone wrong. £5 a ticket - book your place on the event wall and pay on the door We'll be launching the Horbury Sculpture Trail on Wed 31st July at 6pm at the Cluntergate Centre, which is Wakefield Artwalk Night, so why not come along and join us for an introduction to the artists and their work throughout the town? Everyone is welcome, it is completely free, and you will get a map of the sculpture trail to take away. To mark the Yorkshire Sculpture International, the Cluntergate Centre and Horbury Civic Society have invited artists to make temporary sculptures around the town as part of the YSI INDEX Fringe Festival. We are delighted to have the support of Arts Council England, Horbury Civic Society and the Co-op, and the assistance of Graham Roberts, Darren Bailey and the Cluntergate Centre staff in helping independent curator David Gilbert put together the sculpture trail.
We asked artists to propose ideas for site-specific sculptures in unexpected places, linked to the Horbury Aviary project, the Red Box Gallery, and to one of Wakefield’s most famous sons, the legendary naturalist Charles Waterton (1782 – 1865), who lived at Walton Hall. Waterton was a pioneering naturalist and explorer, and inspiration to Charles Darwin and David Attenborough. A generation of schoolchildren grew up fascinated by the tall tales in his book ‘Wanderings in South America’ - of riding a large crocodile, and failing to be bitten by vampire bats in Guyana, though he left his toe deliberately exposed from his hammock night after night. He created a bird sanctuary at Walton Hall, climbed trees until his old age so he could peer into birds’ nests, and was a famous eccentric. The street parade in May was themed around Waterton’s Fantastic Beasts, and this sculpture trail also takes its cue from his remarkable life. Five artists have made public artworks for us. You can find out more about them and their work by picking up a map at local shops and Cluntergate Centre, or following us on social media. www.horburysculpturetrail.org.uk Instagram – horburysculpturetrail Facebook - @horburysculpturetrail The Artists: Sarah Dewhurt The Squire’s Green Hands When visiting Rome Waterton apparently climbed to the top of St Peter’s Cathedral and hung his gloves there, only for Pope Pius VII to order him to go back up and fetch them, which he promptly did. Sarah will place large-scale gloves in high spots around Horbury in partial re-enactment of Waterton’s exploit. Stathis Dimitriadis Content Stathis has worked with local people to make clay tiles, which are installed in the Red Box Gallery and also on the corner of Queen Street and Cross Keys Court. Stathis asked people to make phrases which are sometimes funny, at other times profound, which echo conversations that might have been overheard there in the past. Benjamin Golding Vox Naturae Ben’s large temporary cardboard installation, made from thousands of tiny shards, spreads organically around a pillar in Horbury Library. Seeming almost alive, perhaps plant, maybe animal, this is an intricate and intriguing sculpture which looks as if it is taking over the building. Adrian Riley Tweet-O-Matic Located at the corner of Queen Street and Cross Keys Court, Adrian has made a set of three adapted bird-boxes, celebrating Waterton’s placing of nesting boxes around his estate. Each box dispenses tickets of phonetic birdsong, which visitors can collect, just as Waterton collected rare bird species for his reserve at Walton Hall. Théo Welch-King Waterton Tree Placed in Stan Barstow Gardens, Théo’s large structure is bold and bright, echoing Waterton’s colourful character. It sits next to a large Silver Birch, but this tree is made of metal, and Théo contrasts the appearance of the tree with the material of which it is made. Get ready, comedy is on its way - June 14th. Tom Binns The Psychic ComediumMulti award-winning comedian Tom Binns has performed his Psychic Character Ian D Montfort to 5-star reviews around the world. He’s entertained and amazed sceptics and believers alike on his own BBC Radio 2 series ‘Ian D Montfort is: Unbelievable’, his critically acclaimed BBC One series 'Hospital People', and in the smash hit British film 'Eaten By Lions'. During this time Tom appears to have started to believe he has genuine psychic ability and now performs as The Psychic Comedium. "I've discovered I have psychic abilities that are at least as strong as anyone who has ever claimed to be a psychic. If not stronger” In his performances Tom clearly makes jaw-dropping revelations about his audience but is he gifted? Is he deluded? Or is he just full of sh*t? Whatever you decide his gift for comedy is undeniable and his psychic powers are unbelievable! “Binns has either gone native or so deeply ironic that he’s lost touch with reality. I can only assume he’d sell more tickets as a 'real' psychic. In this post-truth, end of days, era we are living in, why not? Best of luck to him” - Horizon “...remains hilarious even as the tricks become remarkable. This is two shows for one: Pin Sharp character comedy and metaphysical magic to boot” - The Guardian “Spookily skilful, wonderfully observed and hysterically funny” - Time Out Ivan Brackenbury Top Ten Fosters Comedy God Awards Best Established Comedian Nomination Adelaide Fringe 2010 Chortle Top 50 Most Memorable Gigs of the Decade 2000-2010 Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee 2007Cat's Does Countdown favourite Ivan Brackenbury's fantastic 'Hospital Radio Roadshow', complete with inappropriate records and bungled cues, is a regular fixture on the live circuit. A daft, inept yet adorable radio DJ takes you on a hilarious broadcasting journey. This is a unique, wonderfully brilliant show, guaranteed to make you cry with laughter. Ivan captures the fun and excitement you'd expect from being in hospital, with games, giveaways, patients requests and his special blend of music and chat. An absolute must-see. “For simple laugh-'til you ache humour, Ivan Brackenbury is the hit of the Fringe” - Evening Standard “Laughs per minute the funniest show at the Fringe” - Time Out “The whole room was in hysterics from the word go, endorphin-filled laughter indeed proving the best medicine. Brackenbury is absolutely utterly hilarious - I can’t recommend this enough. Go see it” - The Age Pete Otway Since starting to perform in 2010, Pete Otway has quickly gained momentum, establishing himself as an extremely strong new act. As comfortable and confident as an MC as he is an act, he is booked regularly to do both, and was a recent finalist in the 2012 BBC New Comedy Awards. With an affable and conversational style, mixed with an energetic stage manner and original writing, Pete is quickly making a name for himself on the UK circuit, and is certainly one to watch. “Devastatingly funny” - Chortle “Amiable, cheeky classic stand-up” - Liverpool Echo “An amazing comedy talent, and we are making sure we are making sure we follow his every move in his ever rising career” - Crispy Comedy Club This show will also feature a newer act in the middle.
